I have owned this 1969 Volvo (VIN 18345129660) since April 1983. It is the first Volvo 1800S with the new 2-litre engine (B20) and an alternator (not a generator).
Documentation that came with the car shows in 1974 it had slightly over 48,000 miles on the odometer. At that time, a Volvo dealer disconnected the speedometer/odometer due to noise and it was not replaced.
When I bought the car it had been parked in a garage for many years due a broken drive shaft universal joint.
In 1983, I made a total restoration of the car, which took about one year and included the removal of all original “tar” undercoating with a heat gun and a spatula. In some places water had gotten underneath the coating and started the rust process. I have used “Eastwood Rust Converter” over the years to control rust with great success. I also installed many new OEM parts, notably a brand new Volvo B20 engine and a new speedometer.
The car was repainted in 2000 with the blue OEM color #99. Originally, it was green.
In 2003 the original Stromberg carburetors were replaced with 2 new SU carburetors ($575 each) to improve tuning and drivability.
The car has a dealer installed OEM air conditioner that works great. I did replace the original piston compressor with a Japanese rotary compressor in 2005, which improved the effectiveness of the system.
At 70,000 miles I made a compression and valve test which showed a 3% variation in compression and 0.002” gap variation in valve clearance.
In 2013 I replaced the original ignition points with an electronic system.
The car now has about 76,000 miles and that is the true mileage on the new engine. The engine has had 2 oil and filter changes per year.
The car has received many 1st place awards in VSA (Volvo Sports America) 1800 club meetings. This 1800S is original with the exception of the radio, power antenna, air compressor horns, Marshal 662 Spot Lamps, space saver spare tire and theft protection.
Only once in the years I’ve owned this car has it left me stranded and that was due to a defective gas gauge resulting in an empty gas tank.
This sale includes an extensive collection of new (about $1,000 at retail prices) and used parts, parts cataloged, sales brochures, books and service notifications from Volvo. Many but not all are shown in the pictures.
I have over 50 photos, but ebay only allows 24.
If you are looking for an all restored and ”turn key” ready car that will take you across the country with a very small chance of a break down, this is the car for you!
